At least 11 people have been killed and multiple others injured after a driver ploughed into a crowd at a street festival in Vancouver.

The suspect, who struck revellers in his Audi SUV shortly after 8pm local time, has been taken into custody, authorities confirmed.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Canada just a day before its federal elections.

It occurred near the intersection of 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, where people had gathered for the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, a celebration named after a national hero of the Philippines.

Acting police chief Steve Rai called the incident a “senseless” and “heartbreaking” act of violence, adding that this is the “darkest day” in the Canadian city’s history.

However, he confirmed they do not believe that the crash was an “act of terrorism”, as the suspect has a significant history of interactions with police and healthcare professionals “related to mental health”.
