With romance scams on the rise, Durham Regional Police is cautioning people to stay safe on Valentine’s Day.

“While love is in the air, so are scammers looking to take advantage,” DRPS said in a message on social media. “Scammers often target people looking for love online, creating fake profiles to lure victims into emotional and (and financial) traps.”

The police service has a few tips on how to protect yourself from romance scams:

  • Be cautious with unsolicited messages: If someone you’ve just met online seems too perfect, they might not be who they say they are.
  • Never send money or gifts to someone you’ve never met in person

If you have been the victim of a romance scam, report it by calling the non-emergency line at (905) 579-1520. “If something feels off, always trust your instincts … and have a happy and safe Valentine’s Day.”
