An investigation into “defamatory posters” has led to criminal charges in Ontario, police say.

Niagara Regional Police said last month that they were investigating after several posters were found taped to hydro poles and other locations in Thorold.

The posters were discovered in late March.

Police said they wouldn’t provide additional information about the content of the posters in order to protect the victim’s privacy.

In an update issued Wednesday, police said that posters were also found in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls.

“These posters featured an image and personal contact information of the victim, alongside unfounded and defamatory allegations,” police said.

Officers said they identified a suspect and executed a search warrant at a St. Catharines home last Friday.

St. Catharines resident Joseph Michael Roy, 29, has been arrested and charged with six counts of publishing libel known to be false, disobeying a lawful court order, as well as firearm-related offences.
