Ontario’s top doctor has confirmed that a premature infant who contracted measles before birth from their mother has died.
Today, Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s medical officer of health, said that the mother and infant live in southwestern Ontario and that the mother was not vaccinated with the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.
“It is with deep sadness that I confirm that an infant, born prematurely and infected with measles, has tragically passed away in southwestern Ontario,” Moore said in a statement, adding that while measles complicated the prognosis, the infant also suffered from other serious health complications.
