Minister Paul Calandra announced in St. Catharines Thursday afternoon the Ontario government is providing $6.1 million to create new supportive housing units.

$3.5 million of that total will go towards building 15 units at Geneva Street that will be part of supportive housing.

The director of homelessness services for the Niagara region says it’s a bridge-housing project, similar to one that is currently operating in Niagara Falls.

The other $2.6 million has already been put to use, building modular trailer units for emergency shelter purposes at 29 Riordan St.

Associate Minister of Housing Vijay Thanigasalam also spoke at the announcement, saying “we’re removing barriers to make it easier and faster to build homes of all kinds across the province.”

The region is hoping the new three-phase project at Geneva Street will be completed by early 2026.
