PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) – For most of Colorado, Monday was Indigenous Peoples’ Day, but Pueblo still recognizes the day as Columbus Day.

A Columbus Day celebration was hosted near the Columbus statue in Pueblo and so was a demonstration protesters called, “Demonstration to end colonization.”

For some, Monday was a day to celebrate their Italian heritage, for others a chance to bring awareness to the struggles Indigenous people face.

City Councilman for District 2, Joe Latino tells 11 News, “It’s part of the American history and culture. You know Italian-American history and culture.” Latino continues saying, “Columbus never set foot in this continent… and he basically sailed for the Spaniards and was here to search and research and this continent that’s what he was here for. He wasn’t here to cause any problems, in fact, he never even got off the boat. So I’m Italian American. I have every right …
