Investigators from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ)’s major crime division are looking into a house fire in Rimouski, Que., in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, after a body was found inside.

SQ spokesperson Laurie Avoine said on Friday morning that the investigation was brought to provincial police because of the gruesome discovery made on Thursday afternoon.

An ongoing investigation is being conducted to determine the causes and circumstances of the fire.

Avoine said a fire was reported to Rimouski-Neigette police around 4 a.m. Thursday morning in a residence that had apparently exploded on Saint-Germain Street.

The body of a man was then discovered late in the afternoon in the rubble.

The coroner will identify the deceased.

The report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 20, 2024.
