Rain, melting snow causing ‘dangerous conditions’ at Ontario creeks, lakes and streams [Video]

With rising temperatures and as much as 10 mm of rain in the forecast for Tuesday, the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is cautioning residents – especially children – to stay away all watercourses, shorelines, and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams.

With the rain accumulations between 15-20 mm is expected through Wednesday and above zero temperatures, the conservation authority is predicting as much as 25-35 mm of snow melt over the next couple of days, leading to wave activity, elevated water levels, fast flowing water and slippery conditions along stream banks and Lake Ontario shorelines and making these locations “extremely dangerous.”

Milder temperatures, combined with precipitation, frozen ground conditions and an average snow-water equivalent of 95 mm – according to recent snow survey data – will result in increased runoff causing higher than normal water levels and flows in local creeks and streams.

Widespread flooding is not anticipated …
