RCMP detachments will begin the use of body-worn cameras Tuesday [Video]

Three more of Manitoba’s RCMP detachments will now begin the use of body-worn cameras.

According to police, Mounties in the East St. Paul, Grand Marais, and Selkirk detachments will be turning on their body-worn cameras on Tuesday.

Officers in Steinbach, Portage la Prairie, Amaranth, and Treherne have already started the new initiative.

This change is part of the RCMP’s efforts to be more transparent and accountable, with nearly 500 Manitoba officers expected to be equipped with body-worn cameras by April 2025. Police note the use of these cameras will be complemented by a digital evidence management system that will store the body-worn video.

According to the RCMP, body-worn cameras will provide an “independent, unbiased, and objective way to capture interactions between the community and police officers,” which will help resolve public complaints and improve evidence gathering.
