Rush-hour traffic on Crowchild Trail impeded by water main break [Video]

A water main break during Thursday’s evening rush hour brought motorists to a crawl on northbound Crowchild Trail in Calgary’s southwest.

Just before 5 p.m., first responders were dispatched to the area of 26th Avenue and Crowchild Trail S.W. for water pooling in the northbound lanes.

The big concern was over the water eventually freezing and making it dangerous for motorists.

Police shut down the far-right lane at 26th Avenue, leaving two open, but it was a slow go for several hours.

All northbound lanes were later closed for a short time to allow graders to come in and remove the water and ice.

City water crews remained on scene Thursday night, trying to determine the problem and shut off the water.

It’s not clear if any area homes or businesses have been impacted.

The far-right lane of Crowchild Trail at 26th Avenue remained closed into the night.
