Russian military aircraft detected near Alaskas defense zone [Video]

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – A Russian military aircraft was detected and tracked in the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on Monday.

According to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) press release, the Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace.

“This Russian activity in Alaskan ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat,” the press release stated.

ADIZ is defined as a region of international airspace, which NORAD says requires “ready identification of all aircraft in the interest of national security.”

NORAD detected two Russian military aircraft back-to-back in February. In 2024, multiple Russian military aircraft were detected near Alaskan airspace.

NORAD states that it remains ready to employ response options in defense of North America.

Sen. Dan Sullivan talked to Alaska’s News Source in September, saying that the expansion of military presence is the key to prevention.
