Six people were hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning and hundreds remain without power for a third day in Montreal’s Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension borough.
Hydro-Quebec says an equipment failure caused the power outage along Pie-IX Boulevard from around 41st Street to 53rd Street, which has forced around 900 people into the dark.
The six who were sent to the hospital on Monday lit a small fire inside their home to keep warm.
“The house is three days without electricity; it’s very cold,” said resident Carlos Quindero.
The borough opened a third emergency warming centre on Monday with free shuttles to the centres located at the following locations:
- Rene-Goupil swimming pool, 4250 Parc-Rene-Goupil Street
- Saint-Rene-Goupil Church, 4251 Parc-Rene-Goupil Street
- Saint Michel Arena, 3440 East Jarry Street
Pick up spots for shuttles are in front of Bienville Primary School (9275 25th Avenue) or the Rene-Goupil Community Educational Centre (4105 47th Street).
Authorities remind residents to avoid using propane cookers or space heaters to warm homes.
