The long-term effects of U.S. President Donald Trump’s on-again, off-again tariffs have put a scare into staff at the City of Pickering, but a staff recommendation for a scaled down new community centre in Seaton with the elimination of a twin-pad arena component was a bit too much fear-mongering for council, who sent staff back to the drawing board.
Staff will continue with design work without a specific direction from council and report back in September.
Perkins & Will, which was awarded consulting services work on the Seaton Community Centre & Library – the largest project in the city’s history and the first multipurpose recreation complex in Pickering since the Pickering Recreation Complex (now the Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex) opened in 1983 – confirmed to council this week the cost to develop a scaled down option that removes the twin-pad arena from the design would not exceed $250 million.
