A backyard fire caused a lot of panic in La Broquerie Thursday night.

Fire Chief JC Normandeau says his crews were called to Ecole St. Joachim at approximately 8 pm after fire alarms went off inside the school due to heavy smoke.

Normandeau explains there was volleyball being played at the time and so the gym had a lot of people. He notes when firefighters arrived, the school had been evacuated, but there was a lot of panic outside.

Normandeau says firefighters quickly determined where the smoke was coming from.

“The ventilation system picked up on outdoor smoke,” he says. “So, we narrowed it down to someone burning in the backyard.”

Normandeau explains that due to the very low wind and high humidity Thursday evening, the smoke just lingered in the air. And then, with all of the lights outside the school, it gave the appearance of heavy smoke, creating …
