The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service launched a search operation Thursday after receiving a report of migrants on its territory in Montérégie, southwest of Montreal.
The migrants were in the Tsi Snaihne region, near the border with the United States, the police said in a news release.
A Sûreté du Québec helicopter was deployed to assist in the search. The Akwesasne Mohawk Police also received assistance from the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department, the Saint-Régis Mohawk Police and the Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance Service.
The Canada Border Services Agency confirmed Friday morning that an investigation is underway and that it is providing support to the Akwesasne Mohawk Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which handles incidents between designated border points.
It could not provide further details, however, as “an individual’s border and immigration information is considered private and protected by the Privacy Act.”
