Severe thunderstorm watch issued for parts of southern Ontario [Video]

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of southern Ontario.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain on Thursday, Environment and Climate Change Canada said in the alert issued around noon.

Areas impacted by the watch include the Niagara Region, Dunnville, Haldimand, Simcoe and Norfolk.

The storm system is expected to move through Thursday afternoon and early evening.

Wind gusts up to 90 km/h and hail up to three cm in diameter are possible.

A few rounds of thunderstorms are possible on Thursday with a threat that some of them may become severe, Environment Canada said.

Torrential downpours are also possible with these thunderstorms.

There could be power outages, damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters.

Emergency Management Ontario recommends people take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
