ELKHORN, Neb. (WOWT) – Wildfire smoke from western and central Canada made its way to the heartland Sunday.
Conditions triggered the Douglas County Health Department to issue an air quality warning.
“We switched to a northwest wind a couple of days ago, so that started to pull that down into our area,” said First Alert 6 meteorologist Jaret Lansford.
“You can see how the air quality really gets impacted further upstream from us and we have just been pulling more and more of that smoke into our area.”
The northwest wind kept the smoke lingering all day Sunday. Despite a haze in the air, residents and visitors did not let it stop their weekend plans. Many headed to West Omaha for the final day of Elkhorn Days.
“The weather is absolutely perfect, little haze from the smoke, but that is alright, keeps the sun down a little bit,” said metro resident Gus Frics.
