Snow causes ‘backlog of aircraft’ and possible delays at Toronto Pearson Airport in Mississauga, Ontario [Video]

Travellers planning to fly out of Toronto Pearson Airport in Mississauga on Monday are being encouraged by airport officials to check the status of their flight beforehand as a de-icing backlog could cause delays.

Officials at Canada’s biggest and busiest airport, which houses the largest centralized de-icing facility of any airport in the world, said weather is the culprit behind the backup of aircraft waiting to be prepped for takeoff.

“Snowfall this morning has resulted in backlog of aircraft passing through our central de-icing facility,” Pearson officials said in a post to social media on Monday morning. “Crews are continuing to clear the snow. However, it may take some time to catch up and get aircraft moving.”

With delays possible, officials urge travellers headed to Pearson to check the status of their flights ahead of time.

Pearson officials say the airport is well-equipped to keep runways clear and the planes safely moving in winter weather.
