South Dakota students celebrate “Youth Day” at Indian Education Summit [Video]

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Students from around South Dakota gathered for day two of the annual Indian Education Summit.

The summit is a chance for educators and students to develop their understandings and experiences about Native American Culture.

This year’s theme is “Knowledge and Understanding Brings Unity.”

For “Youth Day” on Friday, students had the opportunity to enrich their knowledge of Native American Culture and the Nine tribes of South Dakota.

“We’re firm believers that if we can get the youth to come together, to play together to share a meal together, they learn that there is more in common than there’s not in common,” Fred Osborn, Director of South Dakota’s Office of Indian Education said.

Some of these fun activities included drumming and singing techniques, storytelling of buffalo uses and Lakota Star Knowledge.
