Patrick Brown is calling on senior levels of government to fund special police units to combat the spread of fentanyl.
In a motion that will presented at an upcoming meeting of Peel Region council, the Brampton mayor asks both the federal and provincial governments for the money that would create multi-jurisdictional policing units designed specially to curb the creation and distribution of the lethal opioid.
Fentanyl has made headlines recently due to the demands of U.S. President Donald Trump for Canada to control the illegal cross-border trafficking of the drug.
Used in its intended form fentanyl can be a highly effective synthetic opioid used to treat severe pain. However, the drug can be highly addictive when used to get high. Because of its low production cost it is created and mixed in with other illicit drugs that can increase potency but also lead to coma and death.
