Despite a pause in the application of Canadian and Mexican tariffs, food distributors have started raising prices in anticipation of the potential economic impacts, leaving restaurant owners and managers bracing for difficult decisions.

Managers at Patron Mexican Restaurant in Spokane have reported seeing prices for staple ingredients—such as meat, avocados, and limes—skyrocket in just the past few weeks. These price hikes, although not yet a direct result of the tariffs, are linked to market uncertainties and a fear of what’s to come.

Martin Javier Perez, business manager for Patron Mexican Restaurant, expressed his concern about the unpredictable impact of these increases. 

“Things have already gone up, so once the tariffs do go up, we don’t know if they’ll continue to rise or not,” he said.
