Square Roots shifts focus from food waste to tackling food insecurity in Nova Scotia

Square Roots — a student-run business through Saint Mary’s University — started in 2016 to tackle food waste but has since shifted focus to addressing food insecurity. The program buys imperfect but edible produce from farmers and sells it at reduced prices to communities in need. With over 28 per cent of Nova Scotians facing food insecurity, organizers say demand is growing as more families rely on the initiative for affordable, healthy food. Angela Capobianco reports
