BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The next time you vote for president or governor, one state representative thinks you should have a full day to do it.
State Representative Ontario Tillman of Bessemer has pre-filed House Bill 64, which would make election day a state holiday.
Tillman says his goal is to increase voter turnout and possibly reduce long lines during rush hours.
“I have heard from a few people who said they had to really kinda rush home from work to make sure they can get there before the polls close,” says Tillman. “It doesn’t matter who you voting for. So we just want you to participate in the process and actually vote.”
Tillman, who says he also supports early voting, says he’s waiting on an analysis of the financial impact on the state.
Tillman has also pre-filed a bill to allow teachers to be paid twice a month instead of monthly.
The legislature begins its next session February 4.
