Mississauga plans to use a campaign promise from one party running in the federal election to pressure the others to — if elected — deliver policy that helps people with disabilities make ends meet.

On the campaign trail in Hamilton on Wednesday, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh talked about several measures his party would implement to help Canadians better afford the cost of living.

From the cost of groceries, kids’ clothes and monthly rent to covering internet, cellphone and home heating bills, many people are “really feeling squeezed,” Singh said, adding an NDP government in Ottawa would provide financial relief in a number of ways to middle class Canadians and others facing a monthly money crunch.

One promise from the NDP is to double the Canada Disability Benefit, something Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish picked up on.

Speaking to city councillors at Wednesday’s general committee meeting, the mayor said there’s a “deep need for an increase in (disability) payments,” both at the federal level and provincial level …
