Stephen Colbert on Monday compared President Donald Trump to the Covid-19 pandemic as economic indicators point to the worst downturn in years.
The U.S. stock market saw severe dips Monday amid growing concerns of a recession. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, for example, fell more than 1,000 points before settling at an 890-point loss at market close.
Trump’s ongoing trade wars with Canada and China — initiated by his announcement of steep tariffs on the countries — was widely recognized as a factor in market uncertainty and the ensuing downturn.
On Monday night’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Colbert cited multiple reports describing the extent of that uncertainty. In a piece from Time, a source from Wall Street claimed they were “exhausted” by Trump’s supposed tariff indecision.
