Sun news October 5: Could it be an aurora weekend?

Today’s top story: We are waiting on the sun or, more specifically, on multiple blobs of sun-stuff to reach Earth, bringing hope for auroras this weekend. This past week’s X7 and X9 flares, along with several M flares, have sent coronal mass ejections, aka CMEs heading our way. Staring with the X7 on Tuesday, and adding in the X9 flare on Thursday and a sprinkling of other moderate or M flares, several CMEs are heading to Earth. This means Earth’s magnetic field should be disturbed to the point of moderate-to-strong geomagnetic storms and auroras. The first of the CMEs are anticipated at any time, which will kick things off.
