Tariffs still on following ‘positive’ meeting with U.S. commerce secretary, Premier Ford says [Video]

Tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum are still in place following what Ontario Premier Doug Ford called a “positive” meeting with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick on Thursday.

The meeting came after Ford agreed to halt a 25 per cent energy surcharge on energy exports to the U.S. earlier this week in response to escalating tariffs and repeated threats against Canada’s sovereignty from U.S. President Donald Trump.

“We want the best outcome for both countries,” Ford told reporters following the sit-down.

“We’re like a family, sometimes there’s tension between families,” he said of the strained political and trade relationship between Canada and the U.S., adding that the meeting was a “very productive meeting.”

But Ford said there was no movement from the U.S. on 25 per cent tariffs slapped on aluminum and steel coming into the states from Canada and around the world.
