Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour generating enough money to move the GDP, inflation of entire countries

Taylor Swift’s Eras tour is circling the globe with a Wednesday announcement of an additional 14 shows in the U.K. and Europe for next summer — but none in Canada.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau even joined a growing chorus of Canadians calling for the singer to bring her Eras tour to Canada, tweeting a reply to her announcement with references to the singer’s songs. “It’s me, hi. I know places in Canada would love to have you. So, don’t make it another cruel summer. We hope to see you soon,” Trudeau said.

Economic theories to explain this decision have ranged from the small stadium sizes available, the relative weakness of the Canadian dollar, to the proximity of Canadian cities to the U.S. More notably, the amount of money generated by this tour is staggering — even reportedly enough to move the GDP and inflation in some countries.

Global’s Anne Gaviola speaks with Brett Chang on the Peak podcast on this pop culture and economic cross-over.
