Ana Madera-Navarrete has third-degree burns on 31% of her body, her mother said. The 16-year-old is expected to be in the burn unit for at least four months.

ONTARIO, Ore. — Ana Madera-Navarrete is recovering in the burn unit following a plasma-cutting incident late last month at Ontario High School.

Several EMS and fire units were called to Ontario High after a person was burned while plasma cutting in the school’s metal shop on Feb. 25. The student injured was Madera-Navarrete, a 16-year-old girl and junior at Ontario.

Plasma-cutting is a welding process, where a jet of hot plasma is used to cut metals, steel and aluminum. Ontario Fire and Rescue Chief Clint Benson said the student was transported to a hospital in Boise by air ambulance. She was later taken to Idaho Falls, where a burnt unit is in place.
