Thunderstorm risk, possible tornado watch in Durham Region [Video]

Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, hail and heavy rain are expected across Durham Region Tuesday afternoon and evening, with winds up to 110 km/h and a risk of a tornado.

Environment Canada said conditions are “favourable” for the development of dangerous thunderstorms, triggered by a cold front moving through the area, that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail up to 4 cm in diameter.

Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Be prepared for severe weather and take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Environment Canada is warning residents to stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes. “There isn’t a place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm.”

The thunderstorm warning is in effect for the lakeshore communities in the south as well as the northern townships.
