Treatment of inmates at an Ontario prison being investigated, says Ombudsman [Video]

A full-scale investigation has been launched into the treatment of inmates in an Ontario prison.

A report from the provincial Ombudsman indicated that a review of the Ministry of the Solicitor General’s response to a December 2023 incident at Maplehurst Correctional Complex is underway.

The report cites “significant public concerns about transparency, accountability, and inmates’ rights.”

The inciting altercation under investigation was the byproduct of an alleged assault on a correctional officer at the Maplehurst maximum security complex in Halton Region.

The Maplehurst’s Institutional Crisis Intervention Team (ICIT) was deployed, and they detained the inmates for a total of 48 hours.

According to the office of the Ombudsman, the inmates were allegedly stripped to their underwear and forced to sit on the floor and face the wall with their wrists zip-tied.
