Washington | Reuters—U.S. President Donald Trump’s nominee to run the Commerce Department, Howard Lutnick, said on Wednesday that he will work to increase access to Canada’s dairy market for American farmers and denied that tariffs are inflationary.

Lutnick told a U.S. Senate Commerce Committee hearing that Canada has treated U.S. farmers “horribly” and would work to make sure that they do “much, much better in Canada than they’ve ever done before.”

He also said it was “a nonsense that tariffs cause inflation,” citing low inflation in countries that have high tariffs, China and India.
