Some American visitors to Mississauga may not feel as welcome as they did only a week or so ago, but the city’s mayor says they shouldn’t take it personally — she’s simply responding to the wishes of residents looking to show their Canadian pride and unity in the ongoing trade war with the U.S.

This past weekend, Mississauga joined Barrie and West Lincoln on a list of Ontario municipalities deciding to no longer fly American flags in locations they’ve long flown next to the Canadian flag. U.S. flags have been removed from municipal buildings and other places such as sports arenas and, in Mississauga’s case, waterfront marinas that have long welcomed American boaters making the trip across Lake Ontario.

“Over the weekend, in response to numerous requests from our residents, the city ordered the replacement of U.S. flags with additional and larger Canadian flags from specific city locations in Mississauga,” Mayor Carolyn Parrish said in a statement posted to …
