U.S. Military Issues Historic Apology to Angoon for 1882 Bombardment | Homepage [Video]

The U.S. military has offered a historic apology to the Southeast Alaska village of Angoon and the people have accepted.

The U.S. Navy formally apologized for a bombardment that nearly destroyed the Alaska native village 142 years ago, and hundreds were in Angoon to witness the apology over the weekend.

This is the latest in a series of apologies made recently. Last month, the Navy apologized to the village of Kake for a bombardment in 1869. And just last week, President Biden offered a formal apology for the abuse that Indigenous children endured in boarding schools.

The President of Seaalaska, who was in Angoon this weekend, notes the significance of these important steps forward.
