U.S. tariffs could have impact on Mississippians [Video]

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – President Donald Trump seeks to impose high tariffs on other countries, leading to a potential trade war.

Twenty-five percent tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico and ten percent on Chinese imports will go into effect in March.

“Sadly, these tariffs disproportionately hurt the lower, lower-middle, and middle class,” Thomas Fellows, an economic commentator, said.

Those U.S. tariffs have been met with reciprocal tariffs, which could lead to Mississippians seeing a higher price tag.

“If you are going to be a major industrial economy, you need to produce certain things. And so because other places have tariffs on the United States and we have higher labor costs than a lot of other countries, the costs will be borne by those who use steel as inputs in manufacturing, and this will make steel more expensive,” Dr. Joshua Hendrickson, Department of Economics Chair at The University of …
