A sea of blue and yellow filled Nathan Phillips Square Sunday afternoon, as thousands of people waving flags gathered to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a conflict called the largest and deadliest conflict in Europe since the Second World War.

Chants like “Slava Ukraini” and “We will win” broke out in the crowd that braved the cold winds, many wrapped in Ukrainian flags, their shoes rooted in the unplowed snow covering the square.
