The Ontario government and City of Toronto are looking at building a third transmission line to bring in power from nuclear plants in Durham Region – including a possible underwater cable from Darlington or Pickering to the Port Lands – to meet skyrocketing demand.

Toronto’s electricity demand is expected to roughly double by 2050, with the greatest need being projected in the downtown core. The city is currently supplied by only two transmission supply paths: one from the west at Manby Transmission Station near Kipling Road and Dundas Street and one from the east at Leaside near Overlea Boulevard and Millwood Road.

These pathways will start to reach their capacity in the early 2030s.

A third transmission line into downtown Toronto will ensure the city has the power it needs to support new homes, economic growth and major transit infrastructure, said Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.
