Two Chinese and two Russian military planes were tracked flying over international waters near Alaska.

The US and Canada scrambled fighter jets to respond to the unannounced incursion.

The Chinese and Russian military activity Wednesday was not seen as a threat, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said.

But the incident highlighted the growing alliance between the two nations and it marked the first time Chinese planes were intercepted off of Alaska.

The command said in a statement: “NORAD will continue to monitor competitor activity near North America and meet presence with presence.”

NORAD said they had spotted “two Russian TU-95 and two PRC [Peoples Republic of China] H-6 military aircraft” on July 24.

The four aircraft remained in international airspace and did not cross into American or Canadian airspace.
