A candidate to become Canada’s prime minister has invited the United States to join the country as its 11th province.
Liberal Party leadership candidate Ruby Dhalla’s remarks come after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested Canada could become the 51st state—a comment Canada’s outgoing leader, Justin Trudeau, has taken seriously.
Dhalla also told Newsweek that if Trump follows through on 25 percent tariffs for Canada, she proposes a 25 percent reduction in natural gas, uranium and electric power exports to the States. “This will help to mitigate any economic damage to Canadian businesses and the Canadian economy,” she said.
Beyond trade policies, Dhalla expressed a strong commitment to protecting Canada’s sovereignty, noting that Canada’s natural resources were vital to the U.S. economy, particularly in sectors such as construction and defense.
