A Toronto man is facing numerous charges after taking a police helicopter on a chase through south Oshawa before crashing into a green space near a park.

The 43-year-old man then attempted to flee on foot before quickly running out of steam and laying down on the grass to await approaching officers.

Tactical Support Unit officers with Durham Regional Police were eastbound on Highway 401 just before two a.m. Sunday when they observed a vehicle driving “erratically.” They attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle exited the highway on Stevenson Road and Air1 was called in.

The DRPS chopper followed the vehicle until it crossed Valley Drive at Simcoe Street and came to a stop in the grass. The driver made a brief attempt escape on foot but was quickly apprehended, with Air1 giving officers on the ground a play-by-play to make the arrest.
