More investors are using discount online brokerages, getting their first taste of financial markets through platforms designed to be welcoming and fun. But a pair of studies from the Ontario Securities Commission shows that so-called “gamification” techniques can be harmful, leading to riskier investing. Leslie Byberg, executive vice-president, strategic regulation at the OSC, will discuss how gamification is affecting investors and whether it can also be used by advisors to engage clients and reinforce positive habits.
