The freezing rain event forecast this weekend in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon could pose a safety risk.

Credit Valley Conservation issued a water safety statement ahead of the ice storm forecast to start Friday night and continue over the weekend.

The low-pressure system will bring a “widespread three-day rainfall” and possible freezing rain across southern Ontario starting Friday afternoon, the statement reads.

Rainfall amounts of 35 to 55 mm are expected throughout this event in the Credit River watershed.

Ground conditions remain saturated after spring thaw and water levels are receding but still elevated.

Flooding of the Credit River and its major tributaries is not expected, however, some watersheds may have higher flows and water levels.

“As a result, local streams and rivers may become unsafe, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges, and dams,” the statement reads. “People are warned to stay away from all watercourses and to keep children and pets away.”
