BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada — The Trump administration announced a tariff on steel and aluminum imports Monday, including from Canada, the largest provider of steel imports.

The 25% tariffs could cause a considerable impact, considering Canada brought in more than 6 million tons of steel in 2024. 

David Eby, the premier of British Columbia, said Monday it’s hard for Canada to predict what President Donald Trump is planning after his latest proposal. In Canada, a premier is the head of government of a province or territory. 

“It’s clear to us that just the threat of tariffs are having impacts here in Canada, and they are already driving up costs for US consumers if tariffs actually show up and come in and are implemented,” Eby said. “They will have a significant impact on costs on both sides of the border.
