A Markham man is facing firearm and drug trafficking charges after being stopped by police on Scugog Island near the Great Blue Heron Hotel and the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

Officers with the Durham Police North Division Community Response Team were on proactive patrol on Island Road at the Mississaugas Trail on Friday when they spotted a “suspicious vehicle” and saw drugs and drug paraphernalia inside.

The driver, 36-year-old Eric Young, was taken into custody without incident.

A search then discovered a shotgun, a quantity of cocaine and fentanyl and drug paraphernalia.

Young was charged with numerous offences, including two weapons offences, four counts of drug trafficking and disobeying a court order.

He was held for a bail hearing.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the North Division Community Resource Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1508.
