Strong winds gusting up to 80 km/h and up to 15 cm of snow in the forecast have led to weather alerts issued for parts of southern Ontario.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement on Monday saying to expect strong winds as a cold front moves into southern Ontario east of Toronto, with winds up to 80 km/h possible in Oshawa, Durham region, Pickering, Clarington, Peterborough and elsewhere.

The winds are expected to pick up into the evening and could toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

Power outages are also possible, the weather agency says.

West of the GTA there’s more poor weather expected with between 2 cm to 15 cm of snowfall in the forecast.

Communities on the shores of Lake Huron could see between 5 cm to 15 cm of snow including London, Goderich, Collingwood and Bruce Peninsula.
