Senator Jacinta Nampijina Price speaks to Sarah Ferguson about the need for all Australians to receive an education.
“I think there is sometimes a culture in departments that suggest that Indigenous children are somehow different, that Indigenous people are different. We’re not different,” she told 7.30.
“We are Australian citizens just like everybody else and therefore we should be maintaining a standard which is what we’re ultimately trying to achieve.
“But if you look at some of the culture within, you know, education, it’s always suggested, no, somehow, we learn differently. It’s not the case at all.
“If we’re all treated the same and expected to reach the same standards and in fact the children from the AIF Foundation said that having high expectations is what has pushed them through.
“But we need to put support around these children, so they’re not left in dysfunction, so that they can get an education, because ultimately it doesn’t matter what your background is, if you miss out on an education as a youngster, if you are exposed to domestic and family violence, then you are far more likely to end up in incarceration or have terrible outcomes in life.”
