President Trump and Premier Doug Ford rescinded their tariff threats and plan to meet in Washington D.C. to discuss their trade differences.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — EDITOR’S NOTE: The following story aired before news broke that President Donald Trump and Ontario Premier Doug Ford reversed course.

Western New York manufacturers already feeling the impacts of tariffs placed on Canadian steel and aluminum got even worse news on Tuesday when President Trump responding to threats from Ontario’s Premier doubled down.

Later that same day, both leaders would rescind their threats of a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum and a 25% surcharge on Canadian electricity exported to the U.S., indicating they would meet Thursday in Washington D.C. to discuss a path forward in their trade war.

The constant uncertainty has made it difficult for Western New York manufacturers, many of whom rely on or partner with Canadian firms to do business, stunting growth according to Buffalo Niagara Manufacturers Alliance Executive Director Peter Ahrens.
