Westwood School in Thompson goes up in flames [Video]

An elementary school in Thompson, Man., has gone up in flames on Wednesday morning.

According to the School District of Mystery Lake, there is an active fire at Westwood School.

First responders arrived at the scene around 3:30 a.m. The fire is still active as of noon.

The City of Thompson said it’s believed that the fire was caused by an electrical panel, but it is still too early to know for sure.

The school district notes that the fire will impact September start-up, as portions of the building are being demolished. This means around 280 students and 50 staff will be relocated this fall. Meetings will begin on Wednesday evening to discuss the next steps.

According to the city, the school area where the majority of classrooms are located is destroyed. Firefighters are now working to save the rest of the building, which is mostly the gymnasium.
