With warmer weather finally arriving, many Ontario residents are excited about the upcoming Victoria Day long weekend on May 19, 2025.

Victoria Day, celebrated in honour of Queen Victoria’s birthday, has been observed in Canada since at least 1845 and has always been a distinctly Canadian observance. No other country in the world, including Great Britain, celebrates the monarch’s birthday.

Here’s what’s open and closed in southern Ontario towns and cities this coming holiday Monday:

In Canada, the May 2-4 weekend is often considered the beginning of the summer season. It’s when people open their cottages, book camping trips, fire up their barbecues, and start planting.

It falls on the Monday between the 18th and the 24th (inclusive). This year, it falls on May 19, 2025.
