“Absolutely shocking behaviour,” is the message from Durham Regional Police after four arrests for impaired driving – including one involving the driver of a Durham Region Transit wheelchair bus – midway through the night shift in Whitby.

Just a few days after a holiday weekend RIDE blitz that led to one arrest from 400 vehicles stopped there have been four arrests for impaired driving in just a few hours on the job for Durham Police.

The driver of the DRT OnDemand bus – Thipakar Chandrasekaram, 32, of Toronto – was number three. All four arrests were in Whitby.

Chandrasekaram was arrested just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after witnesses observed the bus being driven in a “reckless manner” near Conlin Road and Manor Drive. Chandrasekaram was charged with impaired driving and over .08.

He was released on an Undertaking.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Durham Regional Police at 1-888-579-1520.
